We will soon (this summer) be relocating to the NJ area above. We have a 2nd grader and two in high school. We want neighbors so our 2nd grader will have people to play with, as well as excellent schools (coming from Texas) Price range prob 800K-$1M.
Any advice?
Summit, Chatham, and Westfield are all pretty dense and urbane (and I don't mean urban) as far as suburbs go. Clinton and Long Valley are much more country. I've never been to Annandale and know nothing about it.

You have to be a bit more specific. As others said, there is a wide variety in the towns you listed. Clinton, Annandale, and Long Valley are all rural while Summit and Westfield, while not urban, could be not be described as typical suburbia.
We moved to Chatham from California last August and could not be happier. The High School is one of the best..not to big, great teachers and support staff.
We are renting instead of buying because we plan on retuning to California in a few years but there are plenty of homes for sale. There is Chatham Boro and Chatham township. The Boro has usually older and smaller homes than the township. Both are nice but have different vibes. Both share the library ans school district. Take a look ~ its been wonderful for our family
