Ha ya all, My husband I are getting transfer to New York (base in Manhattan) and we are looking for areas to move to in New York or new Jersey. I have a 9 year old child and a puppy, I would like a nice young but family oriented community with great private schools. My range is 2000/2500 per month. If anyone can give me any suggestion it will greatly appreciated.
Most of the nice family oriented suburbs in NJ have very good public schools, so it's going to be hard to discuss which private school is right for your nine year old. Plus you need to apply to private schools in the spring, and it's usually quite competitive, so you're at a pretty big disadvantage as far as timing goes.
Also, puppies are tough for rentals. And your budget is kind of slim for the top public school towns.
for manhattan, if you're planning to send your child to private school, meaning that public school zone doesn't matter, then morningside heights is a very nice area, family-friendly community in manhattan. it's just north of upper west side, ending at columbia univ. your rental range should be okay for that neighborhood.
another special area of manhattan is the hudson heights section of washington heights. it's very nice and affordable. perhaps you can send your child to riverdale country school from there.
for nj, the possibilities are endless. i'd look into northern bergen county and essex county.

If they're going to live within the five boroughs, I'd suggest just outright moving to Riverdale. Morningside Heights and Hudson Heights may no longer be the low-rent districts they once were, but there are still some significant crime issues to be dealt with.
Riverdale is a nice mix of urban and gritty suburban. If I wasn't such a Shore guy, I wouldn't mind living there.
