We're considering moving to Teaneck, and found a lovely house just off Cedar (South side) between Teaneck Rd and Queen Anne Rd. Not being local, we were wondering what sort of neighborhood that is. Driving around we noticed some beautiful homes and well-kept lawns, which was nice to see, and Holy Name Hospital is nearby.
So my questions are really these and more:
1. Does this part of Teaneck have any sort of "reputation", good, bad, snobby, dangerous, etc?
2. Where do people grocery shop around there? Are there decent specialty/ethnic grocers, diverse restaurants, etc? If so, where? Specific recommendations would be most welcome!
3. Are there any sort of community groups, activities, local pool club, etc, or website describing them that we could refer to?
I was born and raised in Teaneck. It is a wonderful town. The part of town that you are thinking of is fantastic. You're right near the county golf course, close to the hospital, the library (which has free concerts and lectures and an extensive collection. I worked there when I was in HS). Cedar lane has many wonderful restaurants, a farmers market, Bischoff's home made ice cream, a health food store, some of the best bagels you'll ever have, a wonderful bakery (Butterflakes), Stop and Shop, an old movie theater, etc.
Teaneck is a very safe town. I did go to Catholic HS in northern Bergen County where they had the misconception that Teaneck was a rough town. It's poppycock. A great place to live. Lots of parks, pools, there's even an equestrian park on the Leoina/Teaneck boarder oh, and you're so close to the city.
As for specialty food stores there are a few on Degraw near Queen Anne and I'm sure there are more that I'm not sure of. There is also a section of town on Queen Anne going towards Bergenfield that has shops, restaurants and Mexicalli Blues (a restaurant and live music venue). Votee has a fantastic inground pool and the town offers swimming lessons starting with mom and me thru life guard certification. My brother even took golf lessons from a retired pro golfer in that park when he was a kid.
Restaurants: Veggie Heaven, Angelos Pizza (it's actually in Bogota, but they deliver. Great pizza) There's just about any kind of food you can think of in Teaneck from soul food to chinese to indian to japanese (Japan East on Teaneck Road), to italian, etc.
The town has so many programs. The library is a fantastic research and the librarians would be more than happy to help you out. There's also the Puffin Center on Puffin Way just off of Teaneck road near Degraw Ave.

Thanks in advance for your replies!
I grew up in Teaneck. I wouldn't recommend the town but that's just me.
That part of Teaneck is fine! Actually most of Teaneck is fine. Cedar Lane provides great eating and some shopping options. You are close to Paramus and NY. Town offers alot of services and plenty of parks.

That's exactly where I grew up. But maybe I'm scarred from my childhood and Teaneck really is great.
I would REALLY love to hear your tales of woe coming up on the hard scrabbled streets of Teaneck.
You know, I'm not going share the details of my experience growing up in Teaneck because I'll just get criticized of all kinds of things.
I certainly have a different perspective than a previous poster who apparently loved the town, yet didn't even go to public HS there.
Someone who isn't local, like the OP, and is thinking of buying a house there should do their research well before they do so. As with any town. It could be the perfect town for them, or not. Like any town, it is what it is.
My hometown is Teaneck, but i moved to Lodi when i was 2, so i can't say much. But I only live one town away now and know the area pretty well.
Teaneck has the Holy Name Hospital which i think is On Ceder land and Teaneck Road. The schools are good until i guess High School, but i wouldn't consider it a bad high school, just not great. Teaneck has tons of parks and quaint neighborhoods though Teaneck is very segregated when it comes to whites and blacks. But all in all, racism isn't a problem in the town since from what i recall, Teaneck was the first school in the nation to intergrate the public schools.
You are definitely going to hear mix results about Teaneck, but I can tell you that the town is safe and it's a great place to raise a family and anyone who says otherwise is basing it with little evidence that usually doesn't come up accurate.
