I am relocating from California to NJ and will be working in the Morristown area. My wife and I like the Edgewater area and I wondered if anyone did the reverse commute on a routine basis. Any insights about the time/traffic to and fro would be extremely helpful in making a decision about whether to rent in Edgewater.

I'm figuring the bulk of your commute will be along Rt. 78 West -- to get to 78 from Edgewater, you have to first get to Exit 16E on the NJ Tpk. (then take it down to Exit 14, for 78)
though it isn't alot miles-wise from Edgewater to 16E, that part alone will take you 25-30 minutes (and it will be aggravating, no matter which streets/roads you use).
I know Edgewater is real nice, but I'd advise against this commute...

I did a similar drive (Edgewater to Madison) for a year or so...it wasn't too bad. About 45 mins in the am. Getting to work in the morning was a breeze...took rt3 to rt 46 to rt 80 to 287s. Coming home will be worse because even though it's a reverse commute there is still tons of traffic getting towards the Lincoln (there are less tubes open in that direction so traffic coming into the city is not what you would think it would be). The back roads will be your friend but even they are full of people who have also figured out the good shortcuts. OK and why Edgewater? If you aren't working in the city I think there are better places with more stuff to do.

Thanks for your replies, which makes me lean away from living in Edgewater. We just saw some nice apartments/townhomes in EW and thought it would be great to live near the city, but I'll take a short ride to work over the access to the city on some weekends.

a decent compromise would be Secaucus -- quick access to the NJ Tpk. for work, and bus & light rail options for going into NYC

If you're commuting to Mo'town 5 days a week and just want to stroll the city on weekends, and that is a popular but crowded drive many times, like the other poster mentioned there are many more options around Mo'town that make sense.
I suggest loading Google Earth onto a decently fast pc and flying the area around on your PC to get a feel of areas, topography, density, whatever.
