Hi everyone-
My husband and I (no kids yet) are thinking of moving to New Jersey for the quiet, detached house and yard - we're finally ready for suburban life. The problem-we have no idea where to even start! so please any help would be greatly greatly appreciated!
The info- we both work in the city, both on the east side.
Our budget for a house is 550- pushing to max 600K.
We're looking for somewhere where the commute to the city would be decent, we can deal with a commute of door to door of max 1.5 hours.
We're also looking for a good neighborhood, with good school, maybe a cute little town etc as we are planning a family in the next 2 years.
Can anyone help?
Thanks so much

Secondly, if you have nothing positive to contributed, please do everyone a favor and do not contribute.

what are you talking about? im happy for you. i made the move out of brooklyn last july. im hoping the deal on my crappy brooklyn apartment goes through so i can buy a place. there are lots of new jersey towns to choose from. you looking to drive to the city or train it? i hate the subway.
btw, be nice to people of all races and dont fight any wars. also, telling me not to contribute pretty much guarantees i do the opposite.
I think there's a forum on here where people voted what county they liked most so that might be a good starting point. Most places in Monmouth and Middlesex Counties will only be under 1.5 door to door commute if you take the train. For 550k in these counties, you can get a nice older colonial with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bath, and basement. There are some great deals on homes built after 2000 in South Brunswick just under 600k that seem to be big hits with most people.
For cute small town feel, I think Cranbury, Princeton (which is pretty pricey), and Metuchen (which has a train station). Hope this gets you a starting point. I also hear a lot of great things about Bergen County but am not familiar with that area. People are always talking about how great Westfield and Cranford are and I believe they have good schools so that also might be something to look into. Good luck to you!
We left Brooklyn about 10 years ago, we moved to Hazlet, heard the schools were good. There was also the fact that it was close to SI and Brooklyn. There is a train station in Hazlet, which takes you to the trains for Manhattan, my son-in-law sometimes takes it to come straight to our house. He says the commute isn't bad. The only problem is the parking @ the station is by permit only, there is a long waiting list.
There are many young families moving to the area.

Okee! your comment was a "lost in translation".
My husband and I actually love Brooklyn, and would love to stay here but everything is priced out and it is a bit cramped. Where in Brooklyn was giving you such misery?
and we are looking to train in NJ, def no driving.

im not a trendy manhattan person. i was living in sheepshead bay. i hated living in a place where if i come home 2am i dont feel safe walking to my building (and thats a safe area). i wouldnt like any part of brooklyn, or nyc. im a suburbs guy. i come home from brooklyn each day and feel like im in a nice place. its worth the 1-1.5 hour commute i have each way. im in morganville now but will be looking for a new place soon. holmdel is a possibility.
We also moved to Hazlet from Brooklyn. We commute back to the city by bus and it's not bad. So the bus could be an option for you. We made sure we could walk to the stop. I would suggest that whether you do the bus or the train. Having to drive to either would be too much for me.

i looked at hazlet thinking i may be able to get more for my money there than holmdel. i dont know anything about hazlet but i get the feeling its considered not as nice as holmdel. quality of schools isnt a big deal for me. dont have any kids yet. plus i figure if its a lower quality school my kid would have an easy time being a top student in the school.
