I just realized by reading your article that school is still in session there. I've been away from NJ too long. It seems weird that an article is being written about schools, and my kids have been out now for almost three weeks.

Get out Mike, when do they return to school... I think most areas go back earlier too.

The craziest thing is that they didn't cancel any of the games or other after-school activities. So, what was the point of closing schools?

I think school here this year starts on August 13th. I wonder why times vary by region. I can't imagine why weather would have anything to do with it. It's pretty much hot anywhere in the country between August 1 and Labor Day weekend, when schools traditionally start up again in the NE.

Bergen pretty much lets out mid to late June and gets back in after Labor Day.

Teachers get to stay an extra week or two on either end. (Yippee?)

Bright side is, they are starting to figure out that if you want people to be productive in the classroom that close to summer, AIR CONDITIONING helps. (Some new projects, like the new Science Wing at, I think, Ramapo has AC!!!!).

I can't see why you would want to bring kids back in the Dog Days of summer! Late August can be the hottest muggiest time in NJ!!!!!

Indeed it is However, believe it not, in southern New Mexico, August is generally cooler than June. And, very little humidity. Also, having school end before Memorial Day makes it really feel as if the long weekend is the beginning of summer

As for the hugging bans, that isn't specific to Bergen County. The middle school here that my grand-daughter attended gives 'write-ups' for any type of PDA, including excessive hugging.

As for the flu, I don't know what's right in that situation, but, given how quickly people sue for any little thing, better safe than sorry, I guess.
