I move to N.J. this month and I have a question on tint law in the state. My car is registered in Texas and has tint on all four windows, but my auto insurance is a N.J. Policy. I was told I need to have my vehicle inspected within 7 days of arrival, and I found out today, N.J. does allow front tint. Would I have to remove my tint? Or would I get a pass for having my car registered in another state that allows tint?

When I moved here back in early '87 I had to peel the (non-factory) tint off of the front windows of one of my cars in order to pass inspection.

It sucked but it came off easily with no residue.

Mental, you are going to have to register it in NJ.

If its plated in TX, you should have TX insurance. IF you live in NJ, yo ushould have NJ insurance, plates and inspection.

I just bought the car two days ago. That's the reason for Texas plates and a New Jersey insurance policy. I'm moving to N.J. on Military orders for 4 years, so I was hoping there would a way around registering my car in the state. Therefore, avoiding the tint law.

But I guess you are saying I'm going have to re-register the vehicle once I arrive in the state ?

Yes you need to title and register the car in NJ.

To not do so would deprive NJ of the registration fee - as you'll find out soon enough NJ does not miss an opportunity to extract money from those of us lucky enough to live here

Well the NJ tint law is they don't care if from the front seat back you paint the windows black, but from those front seat windows forward, no tinted glas unless you have a medical prescription for that. I once bought a used car with tinted front windows and as soon as you pass any sort of town looking to write tickets they will write you up.

As far as registration, I don't know if there's any exemption for military, maybe there is, but for anyone else, unless you return to your home state once every 2 weeks, you are supposed to reg the car in NJ.

Oh and the MV inspector also was the one who explained those tinted window rules.

Also got nailed twice for equipment violations, which only cost money but no driving points before I finally pulled the tint off the front side windows. Once in a local town and once on the GSP (Garden St Pkwy) by a trooper.

The irony is the troopers and cops like to have unmarked cars themselves with dark tinted windows.

As far as inspection, there has never been a 7 day rule, but what happens is if and when you reg the car they give you a pink card which goes on the inside of your window which gives you 14 days to get inspected from that point.

Also we have both state run and private inspections stations. The state run ones do not cost anything extra to go through. The private ones cost about $70. Most people use the state ones for obvious reasons, They have been quite efficient for the past years and if you go at the right times of the month you usually don't wait very long. It's a drive through inspection where you exit the car for about 10 minutes while they run it through the "mill".

New cars bought in NJ automatically have a 4 year sticker from the new car dealer. Everybody else's is good for 2 years. If you fail the inspect you usually get a month extension to go through until it passes, unless it is something more serious.

NJ is strict about tint, it has got to go! I had bought a car years ago and it was tinted. I cannot tell you how many times I got pulled over. If you have out of stste plates it is ok, Jersey plates, no go!
