Help! We're hiring movers for the first time (we've always moved ourselves before). It will be one truck and a crew of 4 guys. It's a local move (one end of Hunterdon County to the other) involving a one night storage because our closings on both houses are back to back. We're paying by the hour...we've read that people put out a breakfast spread or a lunch spread for their movers..plus a 20 dollar tip per guy...what to do??

It's a nice touch and you could, but I don't think it's necessary. I always went with some really good movers from Hudson County - did it for a song, so I got them lunch. But it depends on the situation.

Don't buy pizza. They are sick of pizza. I bought sandwiches once and the men nearly cried. They told me that everyone always buys pizza because it is cheap. I wouldn't put out a spread, but a couple of sandwiches. Maybe have a take out menu and have them choose what food they want. I have also bought Chinese (per their request after my offer).

I did. We bought sandwiches. I took their order and went down to the deli to get it. I think they appreciated it.

We used movers twice and offered to get them lunch each time. We also made sure to have plenty of cold drinks available for them.

We offered, but declined. Gave them water. Once we unloaded, we found they broke our bed and crib. Beware.

Default Food and tips for movers

Food - It's really up to you. Most of the above comments are on point.
Tips - Ask the foreman if their company has a tip policy. Most do. They'll ask you to tip the foreman, who then divvies it out according to policy.

I give movers anything they want. I ask if they need anything when they get there, like has everyone eaten, (usually do that individually, any takers, I shout out) tell them to let me know if they need anything, band aids, borrow a forgotten tool, whatever. I then point out the bathroom which they are to use, just so there's no confusion. I always put out an ice filled tub of assorted drinks, water and some soda or the like (hot drinks in the winter) and buy lunch. A few hours into the pack, I just ask the guys to tell me what they want for lunch, making a few suggestions: subs, burgers... Other than that, I just stay nearby but out of the way, every once in a while checking, asking if anything needs attention.

When you tip at the end of the day, make sure that everyone is milling around so that nobody misses their cut.

AMEN! I could not agree more. If the workers are poor and need a meal, by all means provide it. If they are making $20 an hour doing this, they can buy their own lunch.
