My husband and I are moving to NY/NJ in December of this year. We don't know anything about NJ. My husband will be working in Manhattan. Can anyone recommend nice, safe, affordable areas in NJ that are no more than 40 min commute to the city. We are hoping to buy a house in $300-$400K range. Thank you.

I would say you have a lot of looking to do, I would suggest for starters going over areas using mapping sites online to get a feel for things. Basically neighborhoods range from urban and dense all the way to the other extreme, rural country living the further you go out.

Where in Manhattan ?

What precisely do you mean by "40 min commute to the city" ? There are several towns that will give you a 40 minute train ride, but your door-to-desk commute time will be substantially longer.

Could you briefly describe what you mean by a "nice" area ?
