My wife, new born and I will be moving to New Jersey. I'll be working in EWR and my wife will be most likely working in NYC. I have lived all over the world, but I am very unfamiliar with this area. I am looking for a place that is safe and family oriented....but lively also.... with easy commute to both EWR and NYC. We do not mind living in the city or a more rural setting.
If you've lived all over the world you should be able to assimilate well in noJers because it has a strong cultural precense from people all over the world. If you work at EWR and your spouse in NY, it'd probably be convenient for you to live near a train station. Elizabeth and Linden may be a little too rough, but I would recomend you take a look at Rahway, Edison, NB, etc. because the train from there going outbound goes straight to NY and stops at EWR.
$2300 a month will definitely provide rental options down this way. You will have options of condos, townhomes or free standing homes with 2-3 bedrooms in nice areas. The only thing you have to be prepared for is about a 1 hour train or bus ride into midtown.

Thanks for your help!
It's not clear what sort of place you're looking for. A rural setting will not be very lively. A big city will not be as family oriented. There is a large spectrum from New York city itself (which is very lively, and has families living there though perhaps not really "family oriented"), and there is a broad spectrum from that to very quiet towns.
On a rental budget of 2300 a month, you can live almost anywhere you want (including Manhattan).
