I keep on hearing that people in Jersey can be a little rough around the edges when it comes to their attitudes. I was watching the Real Housewives of NJ and the women on the show seemed like they didn't take much crap from each other...
Is this how a lot of people in NJ act?
I think NJ is an intresting place BTW and would love to visit it one day.
On one hand, YES, New Jerseyans tend to be more blunt than many Americans are used to... especially Southerners. Some would say that our New England brethren outdo us, but nevertheless, for Americans of points south and west, New Jerseyans may come off as rude. And yes, due to the hectic pace of life we ARE more direct and less likely to take crap. (We're not falsely polite as we'd accuse many southerners and mid-westerners of being).
That said, be informed that the television show you mentioned is NOT representative of typical New Jerseyans. If the actors carried those attitudes into New Jersey's culture, they'd find themselves with a foot up their arse before they even considered apologizing!
Most New Jerseyans are wonderul people... a bit too uptight maybe due to the hectic pace of life, but not anything like the spoiled brats you see on TV.
New Jerseyans will tell it like it is - not like the Southerners who can be very polite but fake.
One thing about the show - New Jersey women really do look and dress like those ladies -

What's wrong with the way the girls dress or look? Compared to the RH of OC...the NJ girls are TAME.
I think the pressures and hectic pace does produce the NJ attitude. But that doesnt mean Jerseyans cant be polite, kind and generous. I believe we are at our best when volunteering, donating or participating in charity events.
What I know about people from NJ is that to many people outside of NJ we may seem rough and unapproachable and speak our mind but when you get to know us we are good people who you can count on when you need to.
