FYI, Tropicana is HORRIBLE, in my opinion. I had one of my worst hotel experiences ever there.
I quite liked the Tropicana. No problems. Ate at Carmines, yum.
Harrah's (on the Marina) is nice - the pool is to die for and so is the Red Door Spa.
If you don't go to AC with any grand illusions, you'll be fine. I've never felt unsafe on the boardwalk. The restaurants and shops on the Pier are good.
I drove by White House but didn't go in. Next time, definitely.
i am trying to think of a nice place for me and boyfriend to take a trip...i was thinking about going to portland maine for the labor day weekend but although they have the mountains and the ocean...its doesnt seem like much to do.
then theres atlantic city...i have never been there...would we have a good time?
Well your boyfriend probably wont appreciate I telling you this, but for ladies, if you goto atlantic city, checkout the Coach outlet store. I was there july 4th weekend, and never in my life have i seen so many women of all age/color/shape crammed in there in a piranha-like feeding frenzy to buy the bags/shoes in there. There is a huge line just to get in.
I guess the price was good, the bags were originally at $500ish and they are selling it for $150ish. I and my friend ended up just waiting outside for the girls to finish because we were getting pushed around like in a pinball machine.
The person who said the outlets are not nice has probably never be there, or he only likes shopping in exclusive places. For those of you who are not aware, behind Caesars, there is a large areas of outlet stores that contain stores you would see in any mall. There are places like Coach, Banana Republic, etc. The stores are maintained well and the area around them is fine and pleasant.
I have never felt unsafe on the Boardwalk. Obviously, you should use common sense (probably not smart to be out there at 4 AM), but it is a nice place for people watching and the beaches are decent. The casino hotels run the gamut from really nice (Water Club, Borgata) to gaudy (Taj Majal) to decent hotels that have seen better days (Hilton). If you aren't going to stay at a Boardwalk hotel watch out, since those places can often be really pricey and not very nice. All of the Harrah's properties are fine - Harrah's, Bally's, Showboat, Caesars. People really love the pool at Harrah's which is supposed to be very nice. If you can afford the Borgata, that's definitely "the" place to stay.
You are also not too far from Cape May, which is another nice town that you may want to visit if you aren't into gambling that much. Wildwood is also closeby and might be worth a visit.
Atlantic City definitely has seedy parts, but the "resort" areas are perfectly fine.

ive been there. its not so much the stores as the people you are shopping with. my mother's friend didnt mind it, she works as a teacher in paterson. i do mind it, and so does my wife.
its not just about safety, its also atmosphere. this is my leisure time and i dont want to just go to an area because it happens to have stores. i want that area to be a place i am happy being in.
