Well the Ocean View Spa place is quite upscale and nice. There's a whole new village next to it call Pier Village that is all upscale type shopping and housing near the beach.

The seedier parts of Long Branch are just in an economic transitional state. Typical older shore town going through its motions. The parts along the beach and Rt 36 (Ocean Blvd)are fine.

Here's a weblink to the hotel/spa: New Jersey Shore Hotels, Resorts & Long Branch Accommodations - Ocean Place Resort & Spa

The beachfront area is very nice. They have really built it up. It is very upscale. The schools themselves are good, cause they are an abbott district and get lots of state funding, but I personally would not send my children there. It seems like they are really trying to make it a nice area though. The hospital in LB is great. Ocean Place has a Tiki bar, that I hear is really fun.

Multi ethnic city. Black, Mexican, Brazilian, Portuguese, Caucasian. So we have the mix of restaurants. The pezaos are good home made food. Most of them buffets for indoor or take out.
The library has a large selection of DVDs, CDs and audiobooks. Whole floor of children books. Lots of computers.
The school has it's issues but seem to receive lots of state money. This year they built a pool in one of the schools and have summer camp. They brought in a rock climbing wall for the kids.
Yes, there are bad neighborhoods and they are plain to see. Some areas in transition. City is planning a renovation of downtown area this year.
Tax is 3.5% in some parts of the city. Houses within walking distance of the beach < $300,000. And a few blocks away are <$200,000. Lots of apartments around.
