The past few years we have rented a home directly on the beach on the Outer Banks in N. Carolina. The beach there didn't get very crowded, and it was nice and quiet. You do not need a beach pass to go there. You just walk directly out onto the beach. There were a lot of nearby activities as well, such as parasailing, jet skiing, fishing, crabbing, museums, seeing the wild horses, parks etc. And of course there were numerous bars and restaurants. For next summer, we were considering the Jersey shore instead, if it's anything similar. (the drive to the OBX is nearly 10 hours for us) We are not really into huge crowds, and we would again want a house or condo directly on the beach. Our ages are elementary school age, college age, and adults. Thank you.
obx and jersey shore are a lot different. i stay at the jersey shore every summer and i just stayed in obx in june. obx is much quieter and the houses r much bigger. there is a lot more to do in the jersey shore. boardwalks and arcades and all that fun stuff. if you do stay at the jersey shore this summer, i recommend sea isle city.
Thanks for the info. From looking at realtor pics online, I am unable to find anything directly on the beach. It seems that the closest is on a "beach block"? So you have to walk down the street to get to the beach; you are not directly on the beach. Is that how it is on the Jersey shore? Or are there quieter areas of the Jersey shore that aren't so heavily developed, with the possibility of renting a home that is truly beach front?
I believe "beachblock" means you might be 1 house behind a beachfront or you might be right across the street from the beach (you would be on the opposite side of the street from the beachfronts). I don't know all the NJ beach towns but for the most part, you should be very, very close to the beach if you stayed on a beachblock. We stay in a beachfront in Ocean City NJ rented through Monihan. Monihan Realty -Ocean City's Sales and Vacation Rental Source Their site allows you to specify beachfront. We specifically chose one in the higher numbered streets to be away from the boardwalk and downtown area. We stay on the 40s and it's very nice and very quiet. You need a beach badge but the place we go to provides a badge for renters. We love being there and it's a short drive to take my kids to the action downtown. Plenty of restaurants and family friendly but it's a dry town. Otherwise, I agree with the previous posters that Sea Isle City Avalon and Stone Harbor are nice. Quiet towns, nice beaches. They are more toward the south end of NJ. I'm not as tuned into the beaches north of that area.
Beach block indicates you would be within one block from the ocean. Depending on where you rent, this could mean twenty houses from the beach. The Jersey shore tends to be crowded compared to OBX. Parking is another problem and therefore you could be lugging chairs, coolers, etc. one block. Jersey beaches require a badge at a cost, which vary with the towns. The last time we rented the badge was not included with the rental. Traffic congestion is also a consideration. Activities for the kids such as the boardwalk are very expensive. Agree with OP look into south end of NJ (below LBI).
Thank you, I think we will either concentrate on the south end of NJ or head back to the OBX. We just don't want to be near all the traffic/boardwalks etc. We want to be right on the beach, with no street in front of us, or boardwalk blocking our view. We will drive to area attractions. But we definitely don't want a dry town! I will check out Monihan Realty, thanks again.

The closest to this in New Jersey is the northern portion of Long Beach Island (Harvey Cedars, Loveladies). It's quite pricey, however.
Another option would be Sandbridge in the VA beach area. Very similar to the Outer Banks, but a little closer. Large homes, some with pools, and on the ocean.
