We are converting to gas and have received a couple of quotes from contractors that include installing either a Utica steam gas boiler or Weil-McClain. Which one is better? Any other brands we should consider? We really want something that offer the best efficiency and reliability. Any advice on how to select a boiler would be appreciated.

Utica and Weil are both very good units - very reliable. Buderus seems to be a very popular unit at the moment... it may be that they are spending alot of money on advertising?

For a steam boiler you are just not going to find very high efficiency. I think the importance is in the installation. Make sure the contractor installs the unit according to the manufacturer's instructions. The near boiler piping is and venting are very important for good steam. For steam questions and info visit the Wall forum at HeatingHelp.com. Make sure those steam pipes are insulated.
