is it similar to shopping for a mortgage? is it best to call insurance companies directly? is it a good idea to call insurance brokers who give you the best rates of multiple companies? are there extra fees for this service?

my advice would be to use a local independent insurance agent, one who represents different companies. there's no extra cost to you, they are compensated by the insurance company.

it wouldn't hurt to quote with a direct writer online as well. in my opinion though, you'll get much better service from an independent agent overall. Service matters most in the unfortunate circumstance of a claim.

Usually if you have your homeowner's insurance and car insurance from the same company they will give you a discount. I use Geico for both.
