Hi...I have taken a apartment for one year lease. The lease term is I need to pay the rent until somebody occupies the apartment. The reason I am breaking the lease..I lost my job and moving back to my home country. I have the letter from employer clearly stating I am moving out of country. Do I need to pay the rent until somebody rent my place?. Is there any law in NJ protect jobless people? Thanks for your time.

Make sure the place is clean and give the keys to your landlord.

Let them know you are leaving and when you will be vacating.

Let them know where you are going.

Once you are out of the country, no one will likely be pursuing you for money.

Once they rent the apartment, you stop owing rent, but technically,
you'll owe money for the time the apartment was empty and for the
cost of finding a new tenant.

You'll lose your deposit, but from a practical standpoint, you'll never
have to pay any money after you are gone.

Note that if you return to the US, you'll probably have something on
your credit record for a few years until you settle-up with the landlord.

I have no idea why this question was posted in the NM forum,
but I felt like answering it.
