Sleeper sofas are harder to sleep on than airbeds. There's a bar that goes though for "support" that will just cut right through your back. Maybe the airbed placed on top of the sleeper sofa mattress would work out.

Just as an aside, I slept on an airbed for a year. With my girlfriend (it was her airbed)--until we finally came up with the money to buy a mattress. Not the "box spring"--just the mattress.

Most "foundations" no longer contain springs, they're just a box.

I got one of the high ones from Walmart, added a memory foam topper and it is heavenly. The trick is to keep it blown up to firm (if that is what you like).
Also, the one's from Walmart are rounded at the edges, so, standard fitted bed sheets don't fit unless you go up a size.
Yeah, but I wouldn't make my parents sleep on one for four weeks, even if it was comfortable. They should sleep on it and give them a proper bed.

We have a queen size air mattress. I personally don't like sleeping on them. I also bought a memory foam mattress topper to go on top. That makes it much more comfortable to sleep on. I have only known a few people who don't mind sleeping on them.

People really appreciate this and I feel so much better knowing my guests are very comfortable. If I can't offer a real guest bedroom, I would rather deal with the crappy pullout

Air mattresses are comfortable and cheap. After the parents leave, you can take them with you to the camping.

+1
The money that I spent on my Sleep Number bed was the best investment in comfort that I ever made.
Not cheap, but worth every dollar.
