Thoughts:
River Road area is a nice area. You do need to keep in mind the Raritan River is nearby and may flood with heavy drenching rains. Both Buena Vista and Highland Avenue are through streets from River Road to Hoes Lane. That can be a good thing if there is a backup on River Road. Of course, keep in mind that heading toward Rutgers Stadium in the Fall may be problematic with football games. However, the traffic I have seen does move through the area nicely.
New Market I can't speak to. Sorry.
Lake Nelson is a man-made lake. There has been a recent widening project of Metlars Lane (it ain't a "lane" that's for sure) which has made traffic much better in the area. Some people do express concern about high-tension wires and there is a main transmission line that runs through that area.
Both of these areas have easy access to shopping (Middlesex Mall and Hadley Center) as well as shops along Plainfield Avenue. Home Depot is located just off Plainfield Avenue and Lowe's in located along Centenial Avenue.
Schools are going to require a bus ride for the little ones but they are relatively close by. IIRC, the school for the Buena Vista area is right along Buena Vista or Witherspoon.
Hope this gives you a start.
