Hi friends. We're a lesbian couple, one black, one Jewish, who really miss the East Coast. We live in the SF Bay Area, and we both are consultants who work from home and travel a fair amount. We'd like to live about an hour from New York City by train, so we can go a see a play or meet friends for dinner, but we also love to garden and really value a beautiful backyard & pleasant surroundings. We need good airport access, but don't have to commute into the City daily.

We have friends of every hue and persuasion, and basically want to live someplace where we don't have to watch our backs or feel like we're not welcome. We can comfortably spend $500-$600K on a home, and would like a bit of space around of us. Ideally, we'd love a "town" feel, walking-distance to some restaurants, bookstores, a movie theater, and a few people who look like us. Any suggestions and observations would be much appreciated.

I agree, Montclair is a great choice! Also check out Maplewood/SO.

...just a thought! If you want to be minutes outside of Philadelphia, Collingswood would be my choice. Everything you desire and you can get one heck of a house for that budget. ...just throwing it out there.

I am a native NJian but I lived in San Francisco 12 years and just moved back 18 months ago.

Welcome back!

Shanny

Maplewood. 30 min. train to city. Many beautiful houses and neighborhoods. Many gay/lesbian couples/interracial families. diverse community. 20 min. to airport. Perfect match!

Asbury Park is a possibility. They have a big gay section, and it's kinda separate from the high-crime parts of town. The train from A.P. will get you to NYC as well.

If you can afford Montclair (which they can at 500-600k) then recommendation to avoid Asbury. Just ain't worth it.

Interesting story - a friend of mine worked in Asbury Park, and told me that the biggest gay pickup spot in the area was the Neptune Home Depot. Lot of DIY people coming over from Asbury, and met at HD.
