Considering a job in NYC - SOHO area. Have a 5 year old daughter so schools are important. What cities in NJ would you recommend that would be best commute, best schools given my situation. I have never lived in the east.

Why not Westchester County? That will depend on your budget though.
Millburn has great public schools -- some say the best in NJ -- and a midtown direct train to Penn Station. Also, because of the Short Hills Mall, Millburn has much lower property taxes than other cities in Essex County. The combination, however, means that even in this economy, Millburn is really really expensive. Also, it's very very white.
Summit, one town farther on the Midtown direct train line and in Union County rather than Essex, is a very nice town as well, much more diverse (hispanic people live there too). Be very careful, however, about the elementary school district you buy a house in -- they vary tremendously (and housing prices reflect that). With the loss of Wall St. jobs, however, the housing market in both these towns has come down a fair amount.
Maplewood, one town farther in from Millburn (again, on the Midtown direct line) has beautiful housing stock and is much more diverse than either Summit or Millburn. Its public schools have been a matter of great concern, however, and remain somewhat troubled compared to Summit and Millburn. Who knows, maybe they'll improve before your kids hit high school, which is where the worst problems are. Also, the property taxes are outrageous because Essex County supports Newark -- and Maplewood doesn't have the commercial base that Millburn does to bear some of the burden.

What is your budget ? The towns with the best schools and easy commutes are also very expensive.
