LOL. I suppose retirement is mandatory by 55 as well since you can't have a bunch of guys in their 60s tangling with less-than-law-abiding people between ages 20-40. Makes sense.
Ironically, I was on the NJSP web site the other day and came across a page with the list of information nights that are coming up. Looks like a pretty interesting program whether you decide to go for it or not, so I think I'm definitely going to attend one of them. Like I said before, I would do just about anything to become a marine police officer and in NJ, the NJSP is pretty much the only way to do it. Hell, I'd do it for free if they had a volunteer deputy program like some states.
I'm not too big on the idea on sitting behind a bush running radar, but from what I hear the staties here in NJ aren't confined to that as much as "highway patrols" in other states. You might end up patrolling one of the towns that doesn't have their own department.
