I'm considering renting above a deli in East Rutherford, NJ. I'm worried about two things: (1) smells and (2) roaches and other pests. Is there a resource I can consult to find out if a building has had pest problems? Any suggestions on what/how to check out the place before signing a lease?
These delis are required to have inspections done. You should be able to get an idea of the conditions from taking a look around. I would check the deli out and make friends with the owner. Who knows, you might get good deals on sandwiches
Smell wont be a problem... Deli's generally dont even smell inside themselves.
I would do it. Roaches and bugs are generally not a big problem in NJ at all... Never encountered a roach while in NJ.
Smells...depends on whether or not they do any cooking. As for roaches, there's always the possibility. Rats are usually attracted to the dumpster. I doubt the landlord will tell you there's a problem. I would also pass on it.
I would never, ever rent above a deli. I had tons of roaches in Jersey City. I would also catch mice once every week. I lived in a very clean building, however my apartment was on the first floor and happened to be above the garbage disposal.
Dont do it. DOnt trust inspectors either. Use common sense and skip.
