Are there any Taxis with meters in New Jersey that don't just give a non-fixed price? I need to take one from Paramus or East Rutherford and would like to know! It's for this morning, last minute meeting.
There are no taxis at all where I live in Warren County, just private car services. But I remember there being taxis with meters when I lived in Essex County. I would think there should be metered taxis in most of the urban areas.
Metered taxis are generally located where there is a law that they have to have them. In my area, we have a lot of nightlife so there are tons of taxi services and none of them have meters. You usually just tell the driver where you're going and negotiate a price.
Personally, I don't really like this practice (seems like something you'd do on vacation in South America or something) but that's how it seems to be in most places.
In my limited experience with suburban cabs I've usually told them where I wanted to go, they would relay the info to the dispatcher and the dispatcher would come back a few seconds later with the price.
I think they work on a zone system.
But if you know when/where you're going you can call to arrange the trip ahead of time and they'll tell you the price.
