Had some time this afternoon so I surveyed the island's beach damage. The worst was in Harvey Cedars, where there was a 20-foot cliff between the beach entrance and the sand. The streets were blocked off, but in my wisdom I chose to ignore this fact.

In my hometown of Surf City, it wasn't anything too terrible at all. If anyone would like large, hi-res versions of any of these, feel free to e-mail. They were taken with a Nikon SLR that's usually used for the mag and newspapers, so they look pretty cool in large format.

Harvey Cedars:

Looks like some kind of jetty. I don't really hang out on the H.C. beaches too much, but I'm wondering if this was some kind of buried jetty or bulkhead that's now exposed with the erosion.

Taken from the Surf City bay beach on 17th St. There was NO beach left there.

This last one was from during the storm on Friday. My street got pretty flooded, and it was worse Sunday. About 8-inches of standing water in the backyard. Some got in our shed.

I didn't hear anything about this on the news inland. I had no idea that it was so bad. That beach in Harvey Cedars is a mess.

I was on that bay beach just a month ago. I'd never expect a bay side beach to take such a hit.

Bunch of pilings on the beach? That's intriguing. It runs parallel to the shoreline, so it's not really a jetty. A bulkhead? Maybe. You don't usually see those on an ocean beach, but it could have acted as a sort of sea wall. I might even be one of the boardwalks that used to be found on the island.

Thanks for the pictures.
