A 1.5-2.5 hour commute! Wow, your husband is a solider! That long of a commute would drive me bananas.

It is a tough commute. However, in some ways, it is easier after a long day at work to just close your eyes and sit on a train for 2 hours than sit in rush-hour traffic on the Garden State Parkway for 1 hour day after day.

A friend of mine who grew up in Newark bought a house in Maplewood when she got married. She left there about two years ago because her son was becoming a teenager and she felt that Newark was now spilling over into Maplewood by some of the incidents that were going on in the schools.

OK, I'm really sorry that I mentioned Maplewood. It is a very desirable town, but maybe not your cup of tea.

Take a look at Summit, Westfield and Cranford instead (these are all towns with very low crime). They aren't exactly cheap, but you should be able to find something in your budget.
