Housing prices in the area will continue to decline as the town is heavily hit with foreclosures. Its an Abbott district so schools are not the greatest. Has its share of registered sex offenders.
Typical mid-sized city. Some decent areas, some slums. Overall it's pretty blue-collar and industrial. Very densely populated so there is a lot of traffic.
hmm..., i've been to the area only once about 2 years ago, has it changed that much? i didn't see much Hispanic, maybe only certain nabs have concentrated Hispanic population?

You sure you were in Elizabeth? In all seriousness, Elizabeth is at least 70% Hispanic, and that's probably a conservative estimate.
E'town has for a long time been a transitional kind of town, yet very steeped in early American history. It was one of the first towns in Early colonial times, dating back to the 1600's. During the 1950's thru 1970's before the expansion of the suburbs and suburban living many of the stores that are all over NJ started out in Elizabeth. Since that expansion of NJ residents outward into the surrounding suburban counties E'town became more popular for the next wave of people from various places like Cuba or wherever. There are some quite nice residential parts of it and some more urban parts of it. It all depends on location. E'town is very closely commutable to the city and has a new transit village being planned around the train station. The train ride into NYC is quite a lot shorter than most of the outer suburbs. You probably may hear planes flying in and out of Newark airport since about half of the airport is in Elizabeth anyway. If you have school age kids they might have to interact with others from all the parts of the rest of the town, so it all depends on your situation. I think E'town is like 14 miles, so it all depends where you are.
Imo its not a good community but as far as NJs urban areas go it is one of the better ones.
