If it had to be an SUV, easy.. I'd get a Jeep Cherokee, rugged yet elegant.

I just bought my 3rd Rav. I traded in my 2007, but my daughter still has the 2002 I bought in NJ. They do get great trade-in-valve. My Husband drives it with me on weekends because its bigger than the Yaris he drives to work. That one gets 42mpg though.
To the OP, You don't know what gas prices will be in the future so I would look for fuel efficent.
My rav gets about 32mpg.
