Initially we will rent until we get used to the area, etc...When we do buy, we were assuming we would need to spend between 350K-500K. I would like to be in the 300's - 400's if at all possible. We would need a 3 bedroom house or condo with a 2 car garage.
For buying, one town that I think is a good bargain in Bergen County is Oakland. It's not the easiest place to commute to NYC from which helps lower the price a bit, but is still in Bergen County, good schools, and there are some cute houses now in the 300s to 400s. Not too far to Ridgewood either, about ten miles. Good luck.
350-500K can get you something in Paramus. I would say about 400K can get you a very 3 bedroom house probably split level in Paramus. You should also look at Fair Lawn, property is a bit cheaper but taxes are a little higher. I would stay away from Lodi, Elmwood Park no reason to look there at your price range.
I second the people who said both Fair Lawn and Oakland.
