My husband has gotten a job in northern NJ. We are hoping to move to Northern NJ in 1 year. We are looking for a town that would have an atmospher that is similar to the Berkshires. Beautiful sights, parks, open minded / new-age peoples, and affordable housing (500-600K for 3-4 BR single family house). We would appreciate any recommendations for appropriate towns. Thanks,

Where in Northern Jersey roughly? It's a pretty big place (relatively speaking).
The Berkshires is a very mountainous and rural area. If you want that same atmosphere in NJ I think you would have to focus on Sussex County in the northwestern part of the state. Maybe a town like Newton.
Oh you poor thing. You don't know what you are in for. I can't think of any two areas that are more different from each other. When you go house hunting you are going to be shocked by what your dollar will buy you and how high the property taxes are. (I lived in NJ till I was almost 40 and then moved to Eastern MA, which is much more crowded and expensive than western MA, and I was stunned by how far my dollar went, how low the taxes were, and how much natural beauty there was).
OK, first, where is hubby commuting? 20 miles is a looong distance in NJ, unlike MA where people will do that to go to the mall or YMCA.
Second: do you need good schools
Three: do you need natural beauty, or are you ready for a more urban experience?
If you fill us in on those three things we can give you better answer. And be prepared for MASSIVELY LONG LISTS of towns, because NJ is wall to wall independent municipalities, much like MA, but somehow much more overwhelming.
