Cranford has about 23,000 residents and Westfield has about 30,000 residents. There are currently 63 properties on the market in Cranford versus 160 in Westfield. The difference in inventory is not proportional to the population difference, however, Westfield does have several 2+ million dollar homes that will sit on the market longer.
Cranford historically has very low inventory and low turnover. Everything being equal, I dont think they sell any faster but there are just fewer homes on the market. They're both great times, you cannot go wrong with either one.
There is a strong turnover in Westfield due to an aging populace - lots of older folks are selling or downsizing, a trend that's been happening for the past couple of years. Cranford doesn't have this going on.
Cranford is great, but has an issue that tends to drive home prices down a bit - flooding, especially in certain areas of town.
I've lived in Westfield for about 10 years and my impression early on was positive despite the nearly 5 year wait for a parking pass at the train station, the outrageous property taxes, the tiny yards, and the rude people who seem to think that this middle class town is the Beverly Hills of NJ. Westfield is the nicest town in Union County, but it also means that you're close to many not so great towns (Elizabeth, Plainfield, Rahway, Roselle Park) People who grow up in blue-collar towns like Clark, Kenilworth, Garwood, and others move up to Westfield and think they've hit the big time. Westfield is full of people who put on airs to seem like they are better off than they really are. You'll be hard pressed to find someone who actually owns their Mercedes. My advice, look in Morris or Essex counties where the people don't have such low rent attitudes.

oh yea, and Cranford floods. It floods REALLY bad (yes, other towns had problems, but Cranford was hit hard!)
