i've been commuting straight up the parkway to exit 163 rt 17 up to mahwah and i'm ready for some back roads before the summer traffic hits.

suggestions?

You're pretty much going the shortest/straightiest route. Any type of backroads if they exist will put you miles out of your way.

Think it might be time to move closer to work or change jobs.

As said above, you're pretty screwed. Your only other option would be to go up 287, which is around a 20 mile longer trip, and isn't any better traffic-wise once summer hits.

there are none, learn to take fridays off or endure a 3 hour ride home. The only other possibility would be to take 17 north to s 287, that will add about 30 miles and will probably have heavy traffic also

rt 17 by the parkway is a mess. I work in the same area, and I started taking 287 south home (I only have to take it to rt. 280 E, and rarely run into traffic, but it may be different for you going all the way to Matawan).

It adds over 20 miles to my commute, but still saves over 20 minutes in the car.
