Kean, Florio, Whitman, DiFrancesco,McGreevey & Corzine ALL failed to reduce property taxes. ( how could they succeed when there was & is very little a Governor can do in the first place)

The only difference today is Corzine & now Christie are part of a National depressed economy with No end in sight . Things beyond NJ are making things even much worse. 48 states are currently facing Massive shortfalls across the country. That's how bad things are.

When Florio took office in 1990, he inherited a $3 Billion budget deficit from his predecessor Kean. He came into office with NJ having the distinction of BOTH the highest Auto Insurance & the Highest Property taxes.

Today, 19 years later, 7 Governors & counting, we are still # 1 in Auto Ins .& Property Taxes.

I pray to God Christie can do it. But realistically, Christie or the person after him will face enormous odds against them.

All the projected cuts at this point will do little.

The likelihood of New Taxes in the near future is very realistic in NJ & nationally. So people who expect taxes to go down are going to be very disappointed.

Florio used the Tax issue against the Kean admin. in winning against Courter in '89. Whitman used the Tax issue against Florio to win. McGreevey used the Tax issue to get elected. Corzine used Taxes to win. Christie used the Tax issue against Corzine to win.

Christie has 4 years before a New Democrat uses the tax issue against him. Its all about politics. Both parties are just playing musical chairs.

Expect lawsuits all over the place as continued massive cuts start happening in 2010.

When Corzine cut funding for the Arts, Former Gov. Kean threatened Corzine with a lawsuit earlier this year. When Corzine made cuts by forcing a 2 day forlough on state workers, they sued him. About 300 private NJ companies this year have instituted forced 1 to 2 day forloughs for its employees rather than laying off people. Many predict the number of companies to double by next year.

Private garbage collection is a way of life here in the South. We always had private companies in FL and GA. We pay about $51.00 a quarter for once a week pick up with no recycling. (we take that on our own to our local facility, but some city addresses include recycling)

I think Christie will end up like you know who out in CA. There are no easy cuts to make, and some of the most expensive areas are the most resistant to deep cuts.

By the way, we are planning to move back to NJ this summer. My husband grew up in rural NJ and we feel it is still way superior to the South, esp where we are in GA now. (the pits!!) Sure, our taxes will probably almost triple, but at least there will be some signs of intelligent life!
