As a young couple with no kids yet (but planning) my biggest concern in buying a house right now is safety. I would like to move to central jersey, but i don't know a lot of the towns except for Piscataway and Edison. I recently saw a pretty house on middlesex, but I don't know the area.
Any comments about middlesex or any other towns in central jersey are welcome.

Working class town, not bad, neighboring Dunellen similar. Neighboring Piscataway IMO is a step up from that except maybe northeast near Plainfield.

If you want to stay along the 287 corridor, lower density Somerset County to the west is safer, but costlier.

Nothing wrong with Middlesex. Low crime, family neighborhoods. You're fine there and good luck.

I have lived in both Edison and Piscataway and I like the working class neighborhoods of Middlesex better than I do of Piscataway and Edison.
JMO but Middlesex, Piscataway and Edison in that order.
