My mother works for a medical office and shes been there for about 8 years. She is the office manager. Recently the doctor sold the practice and the new doctor assured everyone that salaries would stay. Well they just found out that next month everyone will get a 25% salary cut. Is that just cause for quitting and would she be able to collect unemployment? Shes tried calling the unemployment department for a week now and get through.

Actually IMO they are doing this to push out their current employees. I told my mother not to quit and jsut take it on the chin for now.

If you quit you can not get unemployment. Unemployment is if you are unemployed through no fault of your own. The unemployment office will send a letter to her employer to verify that she was let go and that she did not quit or do something that caused her to get fired.

Keep the job and look around for other work is what I would do.

I agree. 75% more of current salary plus benefits (or without them for that matter) is more than she'd get from unemployment, so why quit ? It also may be easier to find a job if she's currently employed (perhaps makes her look more desirable to a potential employer).

It may prove difficult to keep it a secret that she's looking for work if she needs to attend several interviews, but then if the new boss's goal is to get rid of everyone, that may not be a problem.

also, even if she does get UE it is only 60% of her current salary or a max of $524/week and no health ins. She would have to pay full COBRA to keep her ins if she has any to begin with.

Stay, and start looking elsewhere.

Why quit? She should be seeking for another employer instead.

Be careful - - I for one (didnt quit, division was eliminated) would bite the bullet. Ive been trying to find a postion that will pay me like Im used to for about a year-
15 years> what did loyalty and hard work get me > 6 months severance and a box for my stuff
I wouldve took a 25% cut if it was offered- its horrible being unemployed, even getting close to the MAX unemployment

Keep looking for the same pay, but you'd probably have an easier time finding something that pays less.
