How is that city? My husband is transferring to Newark ( not by choice )
We told the relator that is helping us thru his company that we wanted safe and affordable and he suggested Clifton. So tuesday my husband is flying out to look at homes and apartments to rent there.
Is that a safe city? We were told that alot of families live there.

I've heard Clifton is pretty good, you just want to avoid the part of town that borders near Paterson.

Parts of Clifton are nice; parts not so much. Don't rule out the many towns near Newark such as Bloomfield, Montclair, Verona, Nutley....good luck to you!

Check out the specific area. Clifton has very nice parts and some a tad not-so-nice.

Clifton is a very nice city. I go to the Tick Tock Diner & the Famous Mr. Cupcakes on the weekends, its a cheap retail town as well. Only the parts bordering Paterson are a bit Industrial.

There is, literally, a right and wrong side of the tracks (NJ Transit RR tracks) in Clifton. The north side (where we live, in the Lakeview section) is the wrong side -- dollar stores, multiple nail salons per block, sketchy bodegas selling outdated food, no decent restaurants (though that's true of almost all of Clifton). That being said, our particular block has been quite safe for the 4-1/2 years we've been here, and our neighbors are all quite nice (Clifton lifers, for the most part).

The south side of Clifton is much nicer. Montclair Heights (which is actually Clifton but borders on Montclair) is the nicest area, but you'll pay for it.

One more thing to keep in mind as you move to north NJ: Highest property taxes in the country. Clifton is in Passaic county, which, relatively speaking, has much lower taxes than the nicer communities in Essex county. But then, you get what you pay for. We have a small park just two blocks from our house, yet we take our 4-year old twin girls to parks in Montclair or north to Bergen county, as the playgrounds are much, much nicer.

Also, if you have kids, you should know that Clifton's school system is pretty bad. You may want to look into private schools, if it's in your budget.

Good luck with the move!
