Wow, I was shocked tonight to see a police car parked on the shoulder of a State highway (which is not a brightly lit road) with all the lights off.
I assume he was looking for speeders.
Very irresponsible...endangering his/her own life and possibly the lives of others.
At least pull up on the grass if you want to keep your lights off !!!

They really have no business being "hall monitors" of society. Who appointed them? When did we vote on that? Tradition can be a *****.

Default actually....

The best way to get killed is to pull onto the shoulder of a highway at night and keep your lights/ flashers on. Any drunk, sleepy or 'distracted' driver will peripheraly see the tail lights and head straight for them. If I have to pull over in a driving rain, snow or at night along a featureless high speed road I shut my lights off.

This is one reason why big trucks are discouraged form pulling over onto the side of roads to rest. Too often sleepy drivers drive up their butts. Sleep sets in about 2 in the afternoon as well as during the late night/early mornings.

Good idea, also if you have to pull over for a flat don't put any flares out either because some cop might pull over to ask if you need assistance.

Default judgement grasshopper

"....some cop might pull over to ask if you need assistance."

Most cops are astute enough to recognize the need to provide assisatance based on where and when an occuppied car is parked.

Putting your hood up is a safer alternative and might attract the less than astute officer you might be referring to. "Duh, I didn't see a flare so I didn't stop"

In this day of cell phones I'd rather forego random and dubious assistance in favor of safety.

Can't recommend strolling along the road setting out flares, defeats the point of personal safety. Especially bad when a flare is tossed into a travel lane.

Yep! Cops have been out in force this year... I'm literally seeing 3 - 5 times as many people pulled over... I drive from North to South Jersey (or vice versa) every few days as we transition homes. I used to see 1 or 2 people pulled over, now it's 5 to 10... driving down here Saturday morning we saw 9 people pulled over and 3 other cops running radar.

Hey, if it helps with taxes, I'm all for it! The cruise is now set at 73 instead of 75 though!
