What is the AM commute like on the I-280 from Harrison to Roseland ? It's only 12 miles, but how long will it take? Will it be congested E to W in the AM and reverse in PM ?

30 Minutes. Some days it will be 20 minutes but I say 30 minutes is a good average. Going home may take a little longer. The entrance to the Parkway can back things up.

All depends what time. Honestly getting on 280 can be a drag but one you are on its not bad at all. What time?
Probably between 7:30 -8:00AM and going back 5:30-6:00 PM. My roommate works in NYC and we are looking to rent either in Harrison , South Orange Montclair or Hoboken. Will getting on !-280 take a while from Hoboken?

I think you are overestimating a bit.
Entrance to exit shouldn't take more than 10 or 15 minutes. You are doing the reverse commute, and the traffic going e-w is not bad in the morning. Coming home at 5:30 or 6:00, you may hit NYC bound traffic from the 280 split to the stickle bridge. If this happens, it can add 10 or 15 minutes onto your commute.

Could take 30 minutes or 2 hours. I used to commute to Whippany from Hoboken on 280 hated it.
Dont listen to these 2 people. I have been traveling 280 my entire life, and I live on the same exit as Roseland.
Hey, dont take my word for it either, just try it yourself. You'll see it takes 10 or 15 minutes most days.
This poster is correct. I've made this commute in the opposite direction for the last 17 years. Going west in the AM and east in the PM there is less traffic. One word of caution though. I have seen some very nasty accidents in the opposite lanes. Be extra cautious coming down the big hill into the Oranges in the PM.

That's the best advice do it yourself. I did the commute for 10 years and had horrible experiences at the bridge in Newark dead stop horrible, on several occasions. He obviously had a different experience see for yourself over a period of a week.
I have driven back and forth on 280 for over 15 years (if counting the years that my parents carted me back and forth...it's over 25 years).
You are doing a reverse commute and 30 minutes as a MAX time will be your commute time for Harrison to Roseland in the AM, and Roseland to Harrison in the PM. Give yourself the full 30 minutes to get to work every morning and you'll probably be at your desk 10 minutes early and impress your boss. And if there's extra AM traffic, you'll have an extra 10 minutes to be on time.
A couple notes about your PM commute from Roseland back to Harrison...there will be added NYC-bound traffic on Friday nights and in the summer, there will be added shore/GSP-bound traffic. Still, I don't see it taking much more than 30 minutes (unless there's an accident). It'll never take anywhere near 2 hours.
Lastly, coolwaves, you also stated that in addition to Harrison, you are also considering renting in South Orange, Montclair, or Hoboken. I would rule out Hoboken. While it might be convenient for your roommate that's working in Manhattan, it'll make YOUR commute to Roseland a headache. You're gonna have to deal with an inconvenient driving commute BEFORE you even get to Rt. 280. As far as a driving commute in/out of Hoboken is concerned, there is traffic in that area pretty much most of the day, reverse commute or not (I drove from Livingston/Roseland to Manhattan for almost 2 years at completely OFF-PEAK hours (2:30 in the afternoon going into NYC, and after midnight leaving NYC). If I had traffic in the Hoboken area, you certainly will have more with your regular 9-5ish hours.
