Hello, we are moving from northern NJ to central NJ. My husband will be working in Edison. I like historic, walkable town centers (and preferable a bit of art etc) not too far away. My husband would be happy to live close to woods/mountains etc. Also we have a 3 year old. Neither of us particularly want another very surburban environment. I thought that Flemington and Hopewell looked liked very pretty, interesting towns but I wonder if there is too much traffic between these towns and Edison for it to be a reasonable/happy commute for my husband. Any thoughts/experiences are much appreciated.
In general he aims to be in work for about 8.30am and to be home for about 7.30pm. Would you imagine this (especially the morning time) would be impractical? He had also thought of working a little bit more from a home office. Thanks
I used to live outside Flemington and never had that exact commute, however I do know that 202 can be heavy. You do have the option of taking 514. Thumbs up to Flemington, nice town and graet schools.
Depends on how you define "impractical". 202 is a disaster during rush hour, though once you get to 287 most of the traffic heads north instead of south. He's still looking at a morning commute of over an hour even in good weather, and an evening commute that'll approach 1:15-1:30 I'd say.
Have you looked at the Readington/Whitehouse areas? It's a little shorter to Edison, you would take 22 to 287. You can also look at Three Bridges, all go to the same high school in Flemington (Hunterdon Central).
Thanks- over an hour sounds a bit much (maybe we'll try the drive out in rush hour). I'll take a look at Readington etc too- I hadn't heard much about these towns but will check out the existing threads too.
I know you mentioned not wanting a "suburban" environment, but if a walkable downtown (that you can walk to from your home) is still desirable, you may want to look at Metuchen. The commute to Edison would be much less painful.
Hopewell to Edison: Shoot down 518 or 27 to rt 1 via Adams lane. Or stay on 27 then slip onto 514 in Highland Park and you're there. Even consider jumping on the turnpike right off rt 1 on rt 18 and shoot to Edison in 5 minutes form New Brunswick.
Flemington to Somerville is a major drag in the am even though on a good day somerville to Edison can be done in 20-25 minutes, add 12 minutes from Flemington. do 514 through New Brunswick and if you can get through the few blocks of Highland Park you are in Edison.
You will love Hopewell!!!!
Just some thoughts......
