Its Mostly Latino , with the Jewish section living south of the Main line RR. But theres a small Indian population.
The Latino community was much more diverse before though. Now it's mostly Mexican. However, they have fueled a lot of Passaic's growth as well. All of the new establishments being built in the downtown area are mostly Mexican businesses.
The Indian community is shrinking fast though. The area between Shoprite on Paulison and the high school was a big Indian enclave. That is no longer the case.

Yea , most of my non - Mexican Latino friends have moved out to Clifton and other cities.
OK. Let's put this into perspective with Census Data.
In 2000 Passaic had 67,861 people
62.5% Hispanic (19.7% Mexican)
18.3% Non Hispanic White
5.5% Asian (3.7% Indian)
13.8% Black
The 2006-2008 Community Survey shows us the population did not change much. It was estimated at 67.020. Anyway, the Latino percentage of the population grew to 69.7% of the entire population. (26.3% Mexican, 18% Dominican and 11.8% Puerto Rican).

my impressions - completely raised in passaic & attended hs in clifton, and then moved back to passaic.
i have a serious love & hate relationship with this city. its really my hometown, and there will never ever be any other place like this for me, a place with such mixed emotions. my family immigrated here in 1989 and i grew up here off lexington ave. bordering clifton/botany. the reason my family moved away was because there was a murder on my corner in the house i still dream i live in. this was really a once in a life time event, and it happened. this is not to say that my little hometown is all bad, I had a great childhood growing up here, friends of all backgrounds (hispanics and blacks).
at the same time, now that i'm older, a college grad looking to start his life, this isn't really a place I would want to raise my kids in. I grew up here because it was all my family could afford, and for that, its all I could really ask for. I went to PHS, hated it, and found when my family moved to Clifton, and I then attended CHS, a god send.
My family moved back a few years later (in my college years), and I can't say I hang around here much. It has things to offer (anything if you are working on a budget), but they don't really interest me.
most of the town is hispanic, you'll find black communities by aspen place and off myrtle ave & harrison. the jewish community can be found near pennington and main. and the indian enclave off paulison and main. the largest mexican community can be found off market st. and any remaining polish off parker & botany. there are a few ukrainian churches and schools off hope and president.
this will forever be a blue collar town, a place for immigrants looking to better themselves. i found my own story a success story, and although it wasn't the ideal experience growing up (compared to some people I went to school with in college), i survived and over came the "odds"
I grew up in Wallington. Two bridges seperated Passaic from Wallington. Passaic kids used to ride two on a bike into Wallington, then ride seperate bikes back to Passaic.
Black African American 50yrs. old (FEMALE) raised in the City of Passaic interesting it is!.... waking up everyday and amazing to be seen how we the people allowed to be taken over in this town by immigrants at one time this town was dominated by the whites and blacks. To know and feel the crunch placed in crowed homes, schools, stores, and public enviroments is fowl. Thoughout my duration, I myself a PHS graduate and some level of college education has seen this town self distruct what an UGLY FEELING. "WHO LEFT THE DAM DOOR OPEN" Its a crying shame and we have no one to blame but ourselves......Can I get a wittness? Better yet, I HAVE TO FIND A WAY OUT!
Ironic. Rgathers is making the same complaints that white flighters made about African-Americans. Interesting.
