86 year tradition in Westfield. I think I got every snow suit, hiking boot, and piece of long underwear I ever owned there. So, so sad to see it go - one of the last "mom and pop" stores in town.
At least it lasted long enough to see Foot Locker come and go!
I had my first job at The Leader Store. I was 14, hired by Sidney Spector - a true gentleman! His father, Abraham, who founded the store, still worked many days. I remember running down a block to pick up eggs from a Greek diner many times for Abe. I remember Sid's mother, too, Freida (Sp?), who came in once in a while. I also remember Sid's son, Joey, who eventually ran the store. He was just a young child at the time. And, there was a sister, too. Can't remember her name or Sid's wife's name. But, I remember their faces and their pleasantness. Most of all I remember that Sidney Spector was a good human being, honest and kind and smart - an example for all of us who worked there and shopped there for many years. I moved away a long time ago, but....Oh! What nice memories - three and a half enjoyable years at The Leader Store. It is very sad to learn of its closing. Reflective of the passing of America at its greatest.
