I traveled to Texas for business and did not see the speed limit sign (b/c the road was under construction and there was a big blinking board blocking the sign) when I was driving. So, I got the speeding ticket from a cop. I tried to talk to him that there was no sign.. but he persistently refused to listen to me. I ended up giving my driver's license to him but wrote my driver's license number incorrectly on the ticket - he basically forgot to write all the numbers. He has put my name and dob correctly. Now I went to the city website to find about my fine based on my "incomplete" driver's license number, and I saw the fine on their website with my name on it. Since the police didn't put my correct driver's license number (and my home address) on the ticket is it possible that I can contest and waive the fine? If so, what are my chances? Obviously many states have negative budget, and they are trying to raise money by giving tickets.

That's a tough one. I know that in Phila and NYC I got away with parking tickets because my plates were inputted in wrong. Dunno if there's the same thing going on with moving violations, although a slick lawyer may be able to get you off on a technicality.........

you can also call up a lawyer and discuss your options, especially if the ticket comes with points.

paying the ticket is going to set you back a few hundred. what a lawyer could do is enter a plea bargain with the town prosecutor and have the charge downgraded to a reckless driving (no points) or something like that. it'll still cost you for the lawyer and the court fees.

i would NOT recommend going the officer-made-a-mistake-so-i'm-off-scot-free route. it's not that the officer didn't make a mistake...it's that i've seen judges side with the officers on a few cases to make it seem like too much of a crapshoot. personally, i don't think it's worth it. talk it over with a lawyer.

(full disclosure: i used to work at a municipal court.)

You can contest the ticket but you want to contest the wrong thing. You want to fight the ticket because he put the wrong dl# in the boxes. That won't fly. If you contest it, it would be because of the speeding aspect of it. Like I didn't see the sign, I couldn't slow down in a safe manner, the sun was in my eyes and so forth.
