As I mentioned in a previous post, I am relocating from NY, with a budget over 300K. I am familiar with some of NJ because my parents live here. I know that the taxes are crazy here, but nowadays, where are they not crazy. I am looking for a 3br single family, w/ at least 2baths. I found a couple of homes in west orange with ok taxes, but the realtor wants to show me places in Roselle. I have looked at the posts in roselle, and they were scary. the guy seems to know his stuff, and seems like he is there for us, but I also know that he wants to earn his commission. Can anyone give me an idea of what towns are the "lesser of two evils"? I know that there are pros and cons in every town, and I am flexible. I like the Union area (off of Rt 22), some parts of Hillside, etc. As you can see, I am dazed and confused, and in need of serious help!

You can find a lot in Passaic county or Route 23 in that price range... but sorry, I don't know anything about Union County.

What are you looking for? Suburban, more of an urban feel (without being in the ghetto), country, <30min-NYC >hour-NYC. I can suggest a million places I wouldnt mind living but that doesnt mean YOUd like it. Need mroe info.

You could get something in Woodbridge/Iselin/South Edison for $300k with 3br/1ba, and some may have a second bath. It won't be anything fancy (50-60 y/o, 1,000 sf cape cod), but it may suit your needs and will be less "scary" that Roselle and West Orange. Taxes will be approximately $6k/year.

Have you looked at short sales in West Orange? I know there are 2 houses on either side of me that are going for below $200k. The neighborhood is nice (off Pleasant Valley Rd/Mt Pleasant). They both need some work, but the thing is that the neighborhood is holding it's own.

I think the farther away you are from NYC, the more affordable houses are in general.

I would suggest also looking around neighboring towns to there such as the usual suggestions, Kenilworth, Cranford, Westfield, Garwood, Scotch Plains, etc.

West Orange is good! I can't say I would dis the whole city of Roselle. Just be cautious. I see NOTHING wrong with Union. I have a friend in Hillside. I'd compare it to Roselle. Eh..........but not a strong NO.
How about Maplewood? But you did mention W. Orange, so I'll focus on that and say it's a good town!
