Clearly Christie isn't "anti mass transit", he is pro fiscal integrity. There are some who will squeal whenever the sacred cows are touched, but with the condition we are in, there are no sacred cows.

Sheesh with all that is going on in this state that is the only issue that has you concerned...that transit rates will go up??

Becuz Transit in Urban areas connects ppl with Jobs , you seem to have lack of insight on How Transit works? The NJ Gold Coast , Newark , New Brunswick and a few other cities are and are building new developments around Transit , which encourages more use. You guys up in Northwestern Jersey would have had rail years ago , but due to NIMBY , it never happened , it instead went to another project. We have no more space on most of our highways to add congestion, NJT and cities and towns have worked hard to encourage more Transit use with deals and discounts. Over the past 10 years our system has grown by about 500 miles and an extra 100,000+ riders, and now it seems we are going to step back another 20 years to basically the 80s where nothing was built and ridership dropped. If not the gas tax , raise another tax , like cigarettes , and and Achocol taxes , Christie doesn't realize the backlash hes going to get, with this. The Mayor's of Newark , Paterson, Jersey City , Bayonne , NJ Gold Coast , New Brunswick are going to pressure Christie not to. its an Election year in a few import cities and towns, and this and the other cuts will be on ppl's minds.

Some people in this thread are just being ridiculous... it's not a new tax, it's not a tax of any kind... he's simply removing a subsidy that in the past was provided. NJT needs to learn to run their own balanced budget.

It's like getting 10 bucks from your Grandma for Christmas every year. If one year she doesn't send you the 10 bucks, you didn't lose anything, you simply didn't receive a gift that in the past you did. That's the same thing as removing the subsidy.

There is 1 and only 1 way to lower taxes (or in our case simply balance the budget) when it comes to Government, that is by lowering spending. Governments only make money in 1 way, through taxation. If you want to lower the amount they need in (taxes), they need to reduce the amount they put out (spend).

Don't get upset with the Governor for taking away a gift... get upset with NJ Transit that they can't run anywhere near a balanced budget. Get upset with the union mouthpiece who's trying to convince you that the $33M subsidy the Governor is taking away is the reason prices will go up 30% and that it has nothing to do with the $200+M defecit NJT is running regardless of the subsidy. Or better yet, don't get mad at all. Instead simply be THANKFUL that you've enjoyed below market rates on NJT for years at the expense of your fellow NJ taxpayers. Be thankful for all those gifts that were provided in the past and be UNDERSTANDING that those gifts can't be afforded... just like your Grandma's birthday money when she hit retirement.

Its not a gift , its a daily need for me and 1.6 million other ppl, they can balance a budget , but this past year has been hard for them due to the economy and don't say its becuz the key transit projects about to start or that have already started , becuz those got Fed Funding , and they are needed to improve the infastrature aswell as save money down the road, in costs and Mantience. Although some of it is NJT fault , they do have a plan to sell some of there fleet in return for newer and cheaper fleet. This alone will bring in up 50 million $. Some cuts on the weekend could be done , but raising fares by 20-30% is ridiculous , at least consider 5-10%.

Mod cut

A subsidy in essence is a gift...a gift from the taxpayers of NJ

so it is 1,000,000 NOT 3,500,000 that you posted. And these are 2007 numbers. So all you proved is that the numbers are pretty stable.

The numbers are irrelevant, the reality is far more people will be affected if the state goes under.

True , but more people will lose there jobs if this goes up by 30% , why not cut services and only raise it by 5-10%?
