I lived in Trenton.
I think Atlantic City is worst because it's a gambling city. Just like Las Vegas, Atlantic City gets A LOT of its crime due to drunken/drugged tourism (as does Seaside or Wildwood) And on tpo of that, Atlantic City's population isn't so hot. Most the city is poverty stricken, run down, and ridden with drugs. (So is Trenton, but Trenton has more promising areas)
There are some nice areas on the outskirts of Trenton. Ewing & Pennington are beautiful!
Therein I think lies the difference. Trenton, like many other cities in New Jersey, has some very desirable neigborhoods within proximity of it. Atlantic City, not as much. (Northfield is a notable exception) By the way, not many nationally realize it, and I am not sure how many people even in New Jersey realize it: Atlantic City only has about 35,000 people living within the city borders. It's really not that big of a city, yet it has it's own airport. Even if you add up all the towns in proximity to it, I'd say you are looking at an area with no more than 200k people, and I'd bet a lot of those only live there for a portion of the year. It's very hard to categorize Atlantic City, therefore, relative to other cities in New Jersey. It's very much a unique situation.
One is our state capitol and the other is our top recreational city. I think they both are unique and great cities.
I don't know what you are on but both are terrible cites like one member said one has a beach and the other doesnt. I would say AC is slightly nicer than Trenton because of this fact
