I am returning to the NY area as a single mom of two elementary school kids. I've been reading other threads about the snobbiness of Bergen County, and am wary about moving to a town with a high-pressure social and academic environment.

That said, I am looking for a town in Bergen or Essex counties (to be close to family) where my extremely bright and precocious 9 yr old (she already tests off the charts and is straight A's in 3rd grade in a Vanguard program) will be challenged in school, and where my 5.5 yr old can feel special and find his own groove. I need a short commute to the city, and I am looking to rent a house. Any suggestions?

Another person was looking into Fair Lawn (bergen county) West Orange (Essex County). Both are good towns schools in Fair Lawn are better but West Orange's are good as well. Both towns are not a very high pressure environment like a Ridgewood. Verona, Cedar Groove, Little Falls, West Paterson, Wayne (the latter 3 are in Passiac county but very close) are all good as well.
