I did my taxes last weekend and kinda chuckled when I saw the line on the New Jersey return that asks if you bought anything in a state that did not have sales tax and brought it back to NJ. You can list the price on your return so you can dutifully pay your NJ sales/use tax on it.

Is there anyone who actually voluntarily pays tax to NJ for something they bought elsewhere? I kinda was surprised that they even bother...

Do not forget that when the sales tax went up half a percent was supposed to go to property tax relief. Now with no property tax rebate shouldn't the half percent come off?

The pain of property taxes is shared by all --- or at least, anyone who pays rent. Property owners raise rents to adjust for higher property taxes. Hence, property tax increases get passed on to renters, too.

I doubt section 8 or HUD renters are paying property taxes in any way..yet their children go to public school

true but there are plenty of people renting who are not in section 8 or HUD either...

Anyways in a nutshell, the tax will never come back down because funds are never allocated toward what they're meant for. Thats why when people wonder...well the state stopped doing this so we should get 0.5% back, that'll never be the case because most likely it wasn't used for that in the first place...smoke and mirrors...we know it, the state knows it, we and the state know each other know it, and the state knows we can't do much about it.
