I'm heading upstate this afternoon, and will probably leave monmouth county around 4PM. I typically take the parkway all the way up, but today i'm thinking about possibly jumping off on 78 to 24 to 287N into the thruway.
can anyone with experience tell me what kind of traffic i might expect on this route. i'm thinking that the stretch of 287N before route 80 could be hairy, but I haven't gone that way in quite a while. it's got to be better then GSP North around exit 142 though, right?
for about 5 years, i commuted west on 78 and 24 during PM rush, exiting at short hills. generally this part of my trip was fine, barring accident, weather etc. i know there is construction going on there now though which might be a game changer.
287 backs up as you approach the I-80 interchange around Parsippany, but once you get past that it shouldn't be bad.
I live upstate and this poster is correct. Just a note: taking the GSP saves about 20 miles versus 287.
