I have just come here on H1 Visa and working in software in NY. I am looking for a good town in central or north jersey with a good indian population and a decent commute to NYC.

As everyone on here will tell you the amount you want to spend in rent or to buy a house will dictate where people suggest. Off hand I can say that parts of Hackensack have a very high Indian population.

Jersey City is the ONLY town that can call itself "Little India"
in fact, it does!

Actually, I'd say Iselin has JC beat by a long shot on the "Little India" claim. Iselin and the adjoining area of Edison have been completely bought up by Asians/Indians to the point that practically every single shop on the main thoroughfare (Oak Tree Road) is an Indian grocery, Indian jeweler, Indian restaurant, or sari shop.

Agree with BobKovacs, Iselin has the highest ratio of Indians in the entire northeast.

Yep Bob's 100% right on that. Iselin also is the home of Metropark, a main station on NJ Transit.

If your coming from India- and you want to live near Indian people-(dont take offense, maybe you could care less-I dont know)- - but South Paterson ,and parsipanny have Indian communities within its borders. Along Main st in P-town- and around rutgers village in Parsipanny

oh yeah- like was mentioned> Iselin has the highest ratio of Indians in the entire northeast

But if your comin - assimulate!!! What the hell its 2010- -join the melting pot that is NJ

Edison & Iselin (both of these places are nearly 20% Indian)
Lodi & Bergenfield if you want something closer to NYC (both of these places are nearly 6% Indian)

All of these places are fairly safe.

The Bluffs section of Weehawken has some Indians and a Hindu temple. It's safe and the commute is about as short as can be.
