I work in NJ for a construction company and we must take a 10 hour OSHA safety course they are making everyone take it.
so they have canceled work for one day during the week but noone is getting paid.... IS this legal?
I think the company has to do it for insurance/state law reasons..OSHA training.
If not the company has to close down.
Now if you want your job..you have to do what your company asks (paid or not) or the company will have to let you go..if all refuse..then the company has to close down.
Some companies do have OSHA classes on company time..depends on the company. Union or non-union has nothing to do with it.
I am not in construction but I have to do continuing education and much of it is on my own time. Times are tough and I hear that in NJ the contracting job unemployment rate is as much as 35% - well over national average for all types of work at 10%. Take a deep breath, remember not to make waves, hold onto you job while you have it and take the hit and do the class at no pay. It's not going to kill you this once.
half the company is half is not. does that matter?
Some Union Job sites require OSHA 10 and some are starting to require TWIC registration.
A lot of the specialized work is starting to require certification.

Thats why you never took the classes/course and most likely unemployed..correct?
OSHA is a requirement in most employments today.
